Live Your Mission Consulting founder and principal has designed three-phase planning approach to help partners most fully live out their unique mission in the world: These phases are Discover, Discern and Embark.

Phase One: Discover

A phase of deep organizational listening culminating in a comprehensive “Discover Report” that outlines key emergent themes from this stage. The listening and learning in the Discover phase lays the groundwork for the subsequent Discern phase.

The Discover phase often includes: 

  • Key stakeholder interviews and/or focus groups to explore central questions the organization needs to answer as they consider their future 
  • Reflective analysis of opportunities and risks facing the organization  
  • Review of any past strategic or pastoral plans and key documents
      


Phase Two: Discern

A creative and generative phase that identifies possibilities for the future that grow out of learnings of the Discover phase.

The Discern phase often includes:  

  • A retreat with identified stakeholders, such as the organization’s leaders and board members  
  • Validation or updating of the organization’s mission, vision and values
  • Evaluation of what past and current work can help the organization live out its mission in the future and where the organization might need to grow or let go 
  • Development of clear strategic priorities for the next 3-5 years  

Phase Three: Embark

A phase of deciding and moving forward, setting the organization on a path aligned with its mission.

The Embark phase often includes:

  • Developing measurable objectives with supporting results for each strategic priority area
  • Supporting ownership and shorter-term planning by those who are responsible for implementation
  • Change and transition support as needed 
  • Final documentation and presentation of the plan to leaders, staff, board members, key committees and other stakeholders
